TIP: Remember Rule #1
Publish what you know your family would be proud to see you publish next to your family name.
TIP: Remember the 3 P’s
Be polite and patient with everyone, but be persistent.
TIP: Remember the difference between print and digital
Once it’s digital, it is not secure and it is easily copiable.
You might hand your mobile number to an employer, but would you hand your mobile number to all CCMS faculty and staff at the University?
You might hand a CV with your picture on it to an employer, but would you hand your picture to all CCMS faculty and staff at the University?
The answer to these questions is different for each student and situation. Always remember Rule Number #1.
TIP: Use the e-portfolio regularly
Upload your required assignments during the semester you take the required course. Don't wait until COM 490.
Use your e-portfolio files to collect links, quotes, reflection and research as you progress through your program.
Your e-portfolio should be a combination of products/artifacts which are required and show your best work, as well as additional communication skills and ideas.
TIP: Image sizes & resizing
Resize your images before uploading them. This is very important.
Large and/or high quality images make large files and increase time to load, view or download. People don’t like websites/downloads that take a long time.
Resize to a maximum of 800 x 600 pixels before uploading. The employers and readers will thank you.
TIP: Video
It’s a good idea for every Communications student to have either a YouTubeand/or Vimeo channel depending on your specialization and talents. Vimeo is better for HD and for copyright options, but is more than is necessary for 99% of Communications students.
If you want to include a video or presentation or other item from another service, simply paste a link to the video/presentation/item into your Microsoft Word or Adobe PDF file. Your e-portfolio will automatically display the item.
FAQs/Frequently asked questions
Question: Who can see my e-portfolio?
Answer: All male and female CCMS faculty and staff from both campuses.CCMS e-portfolios are now also viewed and evaluated by MSCHE, ACEJMC, CAA and NAC members both male and female.
Question: How can I share my e-portfolio with someone outside the College?
Answer: This is no longer possible.
Question: What do I do if I’m missing pieces from the required list?
Answer: Please follow this process:
1. Look for and obtain a backup copy on external/usb drives, email or Blackboard.
2. Make a request to the appropriate faculty member IF you submitted the piece electronically to obtain a copy (faculty have general been supportive with “no” answers or a quick send of a copy if they have it).
3. Substitute a different piece along with a brief explanation for the substitution (example case: a COM 315 writing piece for a missing COM 210 piece — roughly equivalent submissions only i.e. writing for writing, Arabic for Arabic, research for research, design for design, video for video etc. to aid in the ACEJMC assessment by NAC, Alumni and faculty).
4. If there is no piece to be obtained or substituted, you must provide a write-up of the project and/or the course of a minimum of 5 sentences (1. what skills were learned/practiced/improved, 2. what content was created, 3. what role you played etc.).
